Horst Dieter Baum - Director of Photography
Ecuadorian-Colombian-American filmmaker, Horst Dieter Baum, began his career in filmmaking from the unlikely point of electronic engineering. After working for 10 years at the New York Times, in positions that ranged all the way from delivery person to Circulation Sales Analyst, he decided to leave the company in order to follow his passion for photography and film.
After working in various short films as production assistance, he then went on to study photography in Houston, Texas. His photography gained exposure and acclaim when he won Best in Show at the Lone Star College’s Photography Forum. From there, he states “on a quick decision, I decided to freeze my environment, but then stumbled into filming a moment.”
Currently, he’s a passionate advocate of the independent film movement and has assisted in various student shorts as director of photography. In the fall of 2008 he created, directed, and shot the short film “Mirrors” with the help of a collaborator partner. He is also an active volunteer for the IFP and served as a videographer for the 2008 IFP Film Week Conference.
